Lack of mosaic lands people in jail

Five people associated with the Nihon Ethics of Video Association (Biderin) which self-censors adult movies were arrested Saturday because a digital mosaic used in an adult movie was too revealing, police said.

Among the five arrested for sale, distribution and abetting of sale of indecent images were the head of Biderin’s inspection division and the head of DVD production company h.m.P, who is also a member of the ethics body’s board.

Biderin is made up of companies making adult movies and regulates members’ productions to ensure they do not break obscenity laws.

Saturday’s arrests were the first targeting actual adult movie screeners since Biderin was set up in 1972 and seems certain to spark debate about the regulation of obscene materials.

Police said the suspects made a DVD that failed to ensure the digital mosaic used in an adult movie sufficiently covered obscene scenes, while Biderin allowed the movie to go on sale because its screening process was insufficient.

In August last year, the Metropolitan Police Department raided Biderin in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, and two adult movie production companies because it deemed the digital mosaic used in three movies still permitted viewers to confirm that intercourse was actually taking place and that Biderin’s inspection was not up to scratch.

Biderin is a member’s only voluntary organization set up in 1972. As of April last year, about 100 companies, mostly in DVD production or publishing, made up the association. Biderin’s screening division is placed directly under the control of the association’s board of directors and there are more than a dozen actual screeners.

Biderin is Japan’s oldest self-regulating organization for adult videos and DVDs. Screeners work in pairs, telling makers improvements that need to be made to avoid breaking the law and then re-inspecting the work. Any works the screeners pass entitle them to be sold with a Biderin sticker.

Biderin’s board is made up of representatives from the association’s member companies, and inspections are carried out according to independently established standards.

Biderin has aimed to maintain a fine balance between self-regulation and freedom of expression. It has set up blue-ribbon evaluation councils made up of prominent figures, including Tokyo University professor emeritus and Constitution specialist Yasuhiro Okudaira and movie critic Yukichi Shinada.

A public high school teacher who parlayed his martial arts skills into becoming the darling of the girls he taught has been arrested for allegedly taking one of his students to a love hotel and having sex with her, according to Friday (2/22).

Tetsuya Enodoki was once a member of Japan’s national karate team and he finished runner-up in his division in the 1993 Asian karate championships.

But since 2001, the 36-year-old black belt has been a history teacher at the Tochigi Commercial High School, where the karate team he formed and coached became one of the strongest school clubs in the country.

Enodoki was particularly successful in coaching the school’s girl team, which was among the top five in Japan. But now, it appears he may have been too successful in getting the girls on a mat of an entirely different kind to the one he normally fights on, though he vehemently denies allegations that he bedded one of the girls he taught.

“I know the girl you’re talking about, but I have never taken her to a love hotel,” Friday quotes Enodoki as telling the police.

Others are not so sure about the “duke of the dojo.”

“He’s a pretty good-looking guy and lots of students developed a schoolgirl crush on him. The only problem was, he was fully aware of that. I remember him being just a little too close to the girls he was teaching. He used to put on these leering grins as he grabbed hold of schoolgirls and threw them to the mat,” an alumnus of the high school where Enodoki taught tells Friday. “Enodoki’s kicking was outstanding and I remember he used to refer to himself as the Conjurer of Kicks.”

Police say Enodoki seduced a second-year student and took her to a love hotel in Tochigi on the night of July 8, 2006. Another graduate of the high school is not surprised by the rumors.

“I remember the girl being around whenever groups of girls got together and talked about Mr. Enodoki. I get the feeling Mr. Enodoki might have realized she fancied him and invited her out to the love hotel with him,” she tells Friday. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other girls involved in the same high jinks, too.” (By Ryann Connell)
